What is a sponsored project?

A sponsored project is a project funded externally, in which a formal written agreement (a grant/cooperative agreement, or a contract) is entered into by a university and the sponsor.  A sponsored project may be thought of as a transaction in which there is a specified statement of work with a related, reciprocal transfer of something of value (financial accountability & deliverables).

The types of sponsored project funded is not limited to research, but also training, instruction, and public service.
